Tuchen is an illustrator, comic artist, and character designer born in Hunan, China. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Theater and Film Art Design from the Communication University of China and is currently pursuing a master's degree in MFA Illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She excels at portrait drawing, with smooth and sharp linework, and specializes in flat coloring while also experimenting with thick painting techniques. Her works are often themed around romance, fantasy, and horror, filled with narrative elements. She enjoys telling a story through a single illustration.
As an illustrator, comic artist, and character designer, my work is deeply influenced by Japanese shōjo manga. The striking contrast of black-and-white manga has had a profound impact on me, teaching me how the bold interplay of light and shadow can significantly enhance both the visual completion and the emotional tension of an artwork.
My educational background in Theater and Film Art Design, which I pursued during my undergraduate studies, laid a strong foundation for my scene design abilities. This training allowed me to better understand spatial relationships and how to create immersive environments. Now, as a graduate student specializing in MFA Illustration, I find that these two disciplines complement each other perfectly. The combination of my scene design skills and my illustration techniques enables me to bring a sense of completeness and cohesion to my compositions.
I have a passion for storytelling. Whether it’s comics or narrative illustration, these are the mediums I use to weave stories into visual form. My art often revolves around themes of romance, fantasy, and horror, because they allow me to explore a broad spectrum of emotions and narratives. I strive to capture a story within a single image, using smooth, sharp linework along with a balance of flat color and thicker painting styles.
For me, storytelling is not just about the characters or the plot, but also about the atmosphere and emotional undertones that the visual setting can convey. With my background in scene design and illustration, I aim to create artworks that not only tell a story but also pull the viewer into the world I’ve built, inviting them to explore further.
